The 100x Illusion<\/b>
It's been a good month for anyone long crypto majors, with BTC climbing more than 20% off its early August low and ETH moving harder than that. Yet the Altcoin Season Index still sits in the 30s and 40s against a threshold of 75, nowhere near the rallies we used to see two or three cycles ago.
Which brings us to the question we keep seeing in group chats. Are the days of the casual 10x and the 100x moonshot simply gone?
We ran the numbers, and the answer isn't pretty.
What We Measured<\/b>
X user Phineas<\/a> found that the average return on the latest 100 calls from the top 10 Pumpfun callers sits at a modest 5x to 10x, and that's a best case since it counts hypothetical peaks rather than executed trades.
To get closer to reality we ran our own Dune queries<\/a> on fully realised round trips over the past 30 days, covering Pumpfun on Solana and the entirety of Robinhood Chain. Unrealised positions and airdrops are excluded, and the analysis is wallet-level, so one trader running several wallets won't show up as a single operator.
The Pumpfun Odds<\/b>
Across roughly 46 million completed trades from 4.9 million wallets:
835 trades returned 100x or better. That's odds of 1 in 55,301, or 0.001%.
A 10x came in at 1 in 1,770, or 0.057%.
Only 33.2% of round trips were profitable at all, and the median trade returned 0.887x, meaning the typical closed position lost 11.3% of its principal.
The 99th percentile trade returned 2.89x. Beating 99 out of every 100 people trading Pumpfun for a month got you less than three times your money.
What The Best Actually Make<\/b>
Surely the top traders are doing better? Among the 50 most profitable wallets by realised PnL, median return on deployed capital was 58.1%, and just 22.1% capital-weighted. Only 8 of the 50 doubled their money, and the best performer fell well short of 10x on the month. Their median best single trade was 11.7x, a fine trade but a long way from the giga-brain 100x most people picture.
The more revealing number is how they got there. Median win rate across the top 50 was 90.6%, over a median of 1,758 closed positions in a single month. These are high-frequency scalping operations taking small near-certain edges thousands of times over, on infrastructure well outside the reach of a discretionary trader. For this cohort the 100x is marketing rather than income.
Robinhood Chain did come out better, with a 100x roughly seven times more likely and a 10x four times more likely. Even so, the median trade still returned 0.935x, and the top 50 there posted a median best single trade of just 4.3x.
Catching And Keeping Are Different Skills<\/b>
Here's the part we suspect a fair few of you will recognise personally. We measured every completed position worth at least $100 over fifteen days, comparing what each was worth at its own peak against what the trader actually walked away with. Collectively, Pumpfun traders spent $2.3 billion, watched those positions peak at $16.85 billion, and realised $2.08 billion.
They were up more than 7x on paper and still closed the fortnight down 9.5% on what they put in. The median position captured 52% of its own peak, and of the 128,329 positions that were at some point worth 10x on principal, 33.7% were eventually closed at an outright loss and 72.1% closed below 2x.
Why It Keeps Getting Harder<\/b>
The structural reason is supply. Since April 2024, roughly 21 million tokens have launched and traded on Pumpfun, of which fewer than 265,000 have graduated to a real AMM. That's a graduation rate of 1.26%, or about 1 in 79. The more tokens competing for attention, the less liquidity flows into any one of them.

Bottom Line<\/b>: A trade on a pre-bonded launchpad coin, which is the level at which you're most likely to catch a 100x, is almost guaranteed to fail. The people posting those screenshots are running thousands of positions a month at a 90% win rate on infrastructure you don't have, and even they aren't printing 100x.
